Emergency works continue on Brisbane’s Victoria Bridge after damage to a high voltage power cable on Tuesday evening.

It is reported that the roadway is expected to remain closed for the next three days following the accidental rupture. Since the event, Brisbane has endured heavy delays for outbound traffic.

Nine News reports that a contractor undergoing boring works hit the 110,000-volt cable with a drill, causing a massive underground explosion.

The obstructed power line is one of the city’s highest-voltage cables, powering much of the city, but authorities say power outages were avoided by the use of back-filling through other connections.

Energex will continue to repair the damaged high voltage cable in Melbourne Street outside QPAC.

Melbourne Street will remain closed as Energex continue to repair the damage just outside of the Queensland Performing arts Centre.

If traveling that way over the weekend, best to seek an alternate route.
