South East Queensland has been warned to brace itself for supercell storms with heavy rain and strong winds later this afternoon.

The Bureau of Meteorology has warned of severe thunderstorms throughout most of Queensland, including Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast.

Brisbane will sweat through muggy conditions, with a humid maximum temperature of 34C forecast for the city, before heavy north to northwesterly winds bring in storms throughout the afternoon.

However, despite the coastal rainfall is expected to miss Fraser Island, ruling out a major change to the bushfire situation on the island.

The drop in temperatures around the state will be welcome reprieve from the heatwave that has struck parts of the state since the beginning of December.
