If you were looking for reason to book a holiday this week, you’d have been almost mad to have turned down Tiger Air’s latest sale which offered consumers $9 flights.
To celebrate their ninth anniversary, the budget airline offered flights that were literally as cheap as chips.
Many have been left wondering if perhaps these flight deals to good to be true? Well, here’s the reality of what these uber cheap flights may entail…
HAVING TROUBLE ACTUALLY FINDING THE CHEAP SEATS
First you need to cope with the airline’s website slowing down while everyone else tries to get their hands on cheap deals at the same time. If you’re just after a bargain and haven’t actually planned your trip, you’ll need to search through all the routes and dates to find the bargains that are actually still available. This is seriously time consuming.
If you want to get in quickly, it’s best to know exactly where and when you’d like to travel.
BEING STUNG WITH EXTRA CHARGES
The flights may be advertised at $9, but there are extra charges involved, people! Tiger Air’s $9 fare sale included taxes, but the extensive list of add-ons (baggage, flexible fares, on-board meals etc.) and transaction fees will end up costing you more than you’d initially hoped.
Budget airlines are notoriously strict about things like check-in times and excess baggage. Be sure to allow yourself plenty of time to make it to the airport before the cut-off time. Make sure you know how much your bag weighs and if you think it’s going to be too heavy – buy your baggage allowance in advance. Or you could just do this…
THE ON BOARD EXPERIENCE
Don’t expect pillows, blankets or in-flight entertainment. They’re considered luxuries, not necessities. On Tigerair you can pay for extra comforts like pillows, but you’ll need to bring your own iPad or device if you want to catch a movie. Same goes for food, don’t expect any freebies. You need to pay.
YOU MIGHT NOT GET TO YOUR DESTINATION ON TIME
This would have to be the most frustrating element! However, although Tigerair have been named the most complained about airline in Australia, you’ll be relieved to hear that they’ve actually picked up their game with punctuality.
According to news.com.au, Tigerair’s long-time reputation as the least likely airline to arrive on time has been changing. Since January 2015, Tigerair has been the most punctual low cost carrier, with the lowest cancellation rate of all major domestic airlines.
If you’re still not convinced and need to make it on time for a special event, make sure you book an earlier flight.
Although there are some cons involved, $9 flights are just too darn cheap for many of us to turn the offer down! That’s probably cheaper than buying a glass of wine at a bar these days!
