New technology could potentially allow passengers to fly from London to Sydney in just two hours!
The revolutionary new ‘scramjet’ engine was tested successfully in the Australian desert this week.
A supersonic combustion engine that uses oxygen from the atmosphere for fuel will fly at seven times the sped of sound.
It is lighter and faster than any fuel-carrying rockets and in this week’s test it reached a height of 172 miles and a speed of Mach 7.5.
It’s currently under test at the world’s largest land testing range, Woomera in South Australia as well as Norway’s Andoya Space centre.
Australia’s chief scientist Alex Zelinsky said “it’s a game-changing technology… and could revolutionise global air travel, providing cost-effect access to space”.
