We’ve all got our daily routines. When we drink a coffee, when we prefer to have a shower, when we eat, and yes – when we go to the toilet as well.

But is there a perfect time of day to poop?

Dr Kenneth Koch told Women’s Health, “For most people, the best time and their regular time is in the morning.”

This is because the digestive system processes the food you eat during the day and when you wake up that food is ready to make its way out.

But if you don’t go in the morning, that’s okay. Dr Stephen B. Hanauer added that a wide range of schedules exist for bowel motions.

Once a day, thrice a day, even once a week is fine, as long as it works for you and you don’t experience any discomfort.

Problems can arise when you disrupt your routine. If you don’t have time and decide your morning poop can wait, you could end up suffering some not so pleasant symptoms. Gassiness, bloating, irritable bowel and irregularity being a few.

The lesson here is to always make time for your poop, to keep your body regular. “You can think of 100 reasons you don’t have time,” Dr. Koch said. “But have that breakfast, recognize that urge to have a bowel movement, and then take the time. That’s how you get into a regular movement.”

Also making sure you’re getting enough fibre in your diet (fruit & veggies) to help maintain a healthy poop schedule.

So if you ever think you can get away with skipping your morning motion, think again!
