An Oxford University professor has come up with an easy way to lose weight.
Ashley Grossman, a doctor and research scientist, said that something as simple as throwing open the bedroom windows before going to sleep could help fat melt away.
His advice is centred on the fact we have two types of body fat.
The one that causes our problems is the white variety, which soaks up extra calories and stores them in bellies, love handles and thighs.
However, adults also have a small out of brown ‘healthy fat’. This publicises in burning off calories and generates heat as it does so.
For those battling the bulge, those ‘bad’ white fats can be turned into ‘good’ brown fat, and it could be cold that could trigger the change.
Professor Grossman said: ‘My great aunt Norah was married to my uncle Albert and Norah and Albert lived in this little flat, and whenever you went in there, you had to take a deep breath because it was boiling.
‘They always had their heating on and all the windows closed and Norah and Albert were immense. They were enormous.
‘There always seemed to me to be some connection between this incredible heat and their obesity.
‘And we are now learning that when you are cold, you brown your fat, to keep warm.
‘So rather than take all these [weight loss] drugs or having to eat fewer Cheerios or whatever, the ideal solution seems, that when you go to bed tonight throw all the windows open, put any air conditioning on and hey, you lose weight.
‘It’s a nice idea, and there is actual scientific data supporting this concept.’
So, there we have it. Weight loss, thanks to a window!
