I know it sounds spoiled, but I just can’t seem to find a good, relaxing beer garden in Sydney that serves GREAT food, isn’t CRAZY expensive and isn’t surrounded by poker machines.
I know we’re pretty lucky to live in this great city, but when it came to a Sunday session – I was stumped.
Then, I heard the Charing Cross Hotel in Waverly had had an update – so I rallied up a few of the troops and made my way their to sample the goods.
The thing I loved most when I arrived was the big ‘CHARO’ sign sitting pride of placement smack-bang in the middle of the beer garden, it made it feel like your local pub, but with a lick of paint and a whole lot of gloss.
I also loved that you can choose between the pub and the dining room menu, depending on what kind of mood you’re in.
We opted for the Feast menu, a three-course meal for just $60 a pop. I must tell you, we really did FEAST! On pork cheek croquettes, scallops and kingfish for entree, seared Tasmanian salmon salad, heirloom tomato salad, and fig, beets and goats cheese salad, then roasted Mahi Mahi and pot roasted shoulder of lamb for mains and THE best hot snickers pudding you’ve ever clapped eyes on.
They also do incredible cocktails, we discovered. I recommend the pineapple and ginger mojito!
Just a heads up, in the pub they have burgers named after Eastern suburb beaches; you can grab the ‘Bondi’ with bacon, cheese and American mustard, or maybe the ‘Clovelly’, with Southern fried chicken, iceberg lettuce and garlic aioli?
The best (and most controversial) bit? You can get ANY burger ‘Tamarama Topless’, which means no bread! Your burger comes in-between pieces of lettuce instead.
Many think that doesn’t make it a burger… I say that’s up to you!
