When a few actors and actresses walk up the stairs to accept their Oscar they’ll most likely thank their families, co-stars and possibly even God. Still, there are a few Hollywood heavyweights who get thanked by winners even more than the man upstairs.
According to a study by Vocativ who analyzed all 1,396 Academy Award acceptance speeches, Steven Spielberg has been thanked 42 times compared to God, who was mentioned in only 19 speeches.
Spielberg’s Oscar-winning films include Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan, Jaws, E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial and Jurassic Park among others.
Also, actors and actresses thanked “the Academy” 43 percent of the time. The stars thanked their parents a mere 28 percent of the time.
Here’s the full list of Hollywood directors and producers who all beat out God for Oscar speech mentions:
1. Steven Spielberg (thanked 42 times)
2. Harvey Weinstein (thanked 34 times)
3. James Cameron (thanked 28 times)
4. George Lucas (thanked 23 times)
5. Peter Jackson (thanked 22 times)
God ranked sixth.
