It’s his first year a in a full time television job but that hasn’t stopped Waleed Aly taking home both a silver and the Gold Logie!
Aly was the favourite for the publicly voted award and he did take it out over SBS presenter Lee Lin Chin, his own colleague Carrie Bickmore, actress Essie Davis, Grant Denyer and Scott Cam for the prized accolade.
When he received the award, Aly joked ”There’s nothing wrong with the picture. If you are in the room I’m sure there’s an Instagram filter to return things to normal. It will be fine.”
His first year of presenting The Project has seen Aly’s popularity soar with impassioned speeches like ”ISIS is weak” and his takedowns on negative gearing and homelessness capturing the publics attention.
In both his acceptance speeches, best presenter and for gold logie, Aly thanked his wife while reflecting on the significance of the award being awarded to a Muslim.

Saying ”There have been a lot of people in the past week or two who have made it clear to me that being here right now really matters to them,”.
He continues saying ”It matters to them for a particular reason. That reason was brought home eerily not so long ago when someone who is in this room — and I’m not going to use the name they use in the industry — came up to me, introduced themselves and said, ‘I really hope you win. My name is Mustafa. But I can’t use that name because I won’t get a job.”

Aly then continues to make the point that if ”tonight means anything, it’s that the Australian public, our audience, as far as they’re concerned, there is absolutely no reason why that can’t change.”
