Did you know the world’s longest running laboratory experiment is in fact still going on right here in Brisbane?
Called the Pitch Drop Experiment, the 83-year-old science experiment was first started by Professor Thomas Parnell at The University of Queensland in St Lucia.
Started in 1927, the experiment aims to illustrate that everyday materials can exhibit “surprising properties”.
In this instance, it’s that pitch – a substance that feels solid and brittle at room temperature – is actually fluid.
While it is extremely slow moving, the pitch can be seen to drop from a funnel.
However it does take a while.
In 83 years just nine drops have fully formed. Even more surprising – no one has ever seen the drop fall according to University!
