With the passing of Brady Bunch Mum Florence Henderson last week, attention has returned to one of the juiciest rumours in TV history – that Barry Williams, who played the eldest brady son Greg, dated Florence.
Rumour had it that Williams, who was 15-years-old, dated Henderson who was 36 during the second season of the show in 1970.
Henderson, who died of heart failure in LA last week, was a public icon of motherhood and was often forced to bat off the salacious rumour during multple interviews.
Barry Williams has confirmed that their relationship was miles from the sordid affair that has been suggested and that their relationship was another example of what a kind woman Florence was.
‘When those little things called hormones start kicking in, you get excited by even inanimate objects,’ he told People magazine.
‘It wasn’t that I sought to bed her. I just wanted to spend time with her. It was flattering that she gave me any attention at all.’
The duo went out for dinner together and saw a show at a LA hotel. It was a one off and progressed no further than that.
‘He had a crush on me, and he asked me out for a date, which I’ll never forget,’ she confirmed.
‘He was too young to drive, so his older brother brought him to my hotel, and then I drove us to the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, where we saw a singer.
‘It was so sweet because Barry made sure we had a good table. After the show, his brother picked him up and took him home. The crush was a very serious thing for him, so I was never condescending. I certainly liked him too, but I wasn’t exactly the Cher of the TV mom set.’
