WARNING: The below video footage may be distressing to some viewers.
A desperate Australian mum has posted a heartbreaking video to her Facebook page, appealing to anti-vaxxers to realise the importance of herd immunity.
Sandra Tee’s tiny five-week-old daughter contracted whooping cough and had to be rushed to hospital; once there, the poor bub was closely monitored, round-the-clock, as she choked and struggled to breathe.
“This video may distress some people, but I’m sharing to show just how scary and dangerous whooping cough is to babies who are too young to be vaccinated,” Mrs Tee wrote.
“Babies rely on herd immunity to keep them safe and unfortunately we cannot achieve that without high vaccination rates.”
In the clip, baby Heidi is surrounded by medical staff and her family, who are desperately trying to keep her oxygen flow up.
“Whooping cough is not always a loud obvious cough,” Mrs Tee continued. “The scary symptom for babies is when they don’t cough but silently start to choke and turn blue/ purple from lack of oxygen.
“If we weren’t in hospital and sitting watching our baby 24/7 the outcome would be fatal.”
The mother-of-two is now hoping that her video will help to “educate more people on the importance of vaccinations”; the Macarthur resident said that while she was aware of the controversy surrounding vaccines, she would never wish having to give CPR to your own child on anyone.
“Heidi’s too little to be protected at the moment and there’s only so much we as parents can do to protect her so we are relying on everybody else to protect these vulnerable kids,” Mrs Tee told 7 News.
“We had a baby in our hands that was happy and healthy and now, we’ve got a sick baby on our hands that is struggling to breath.”
