He’s Never Gonna Give It Up
23 years after announcing his retirement, 80’s icon Rick Astley has released a comeback single, ‘Keep Singing’.
The 50-year-old appeared on British breakfast show Lorraine and played a sneak peek of his new record, to Amanda Holden, who is currently filling in for Lorraine Kelly.
Rick told Amanda that he quit music at 27 despite his success because he became disillusioned with the industry.
He said: ‘People like Pete Waterman gave me such an amazing start. But the music industry is a business and sometimes it felt like I could have been selling beans.
‘I felt so far removed from the music.’
The singer has taken a leaf out of Adele’s book and called his new record 50, after hitting the milestone age in February – it is set to be released on June 17.
He said: ‘It was a big milestone. I got back in the studio and friends were telling me the material I was working on was pretty good. So I decided to go for it.’
Despite retiring from the music business, Rick released an album ten years ago and he toured for the first time in 14 years.
In September 2008, the crooner was nominated for the Best Act Ever gong at the MTV Europe Music Awards.
He said: ‘50 marks both a new chapter in my journey as an artist, and a return to the music I first fell in love with.
‘I could not be more excited to share it with my fans, and take these songs, that have been years in the making, out of the studio and onto the stage.’
And it seems his popularity is as high as ever, with viewers taking to Twitter to rejoice over his return.
One viewer wrote: ‘Just watched the official video of your new single and it is spectacular! 🙂 Love it!’
Another posted; ‘Rick Astley is showing that you CAN change your stars. Keep singing Rick… Keep singing…’
A third said: ‘Tweets I Never Thought I’d Send: My God, I love the new Rick Astley single. And the Reef one too. #ThrowbackThursday.’
