PSA: Dads’ Apparently No Longer Want To Be Called ‘Dad’!
If that heading had you exclaiming “what the?!” – don’t worry, you’re not alone.
That was exactly our reaction when we learned that the word “Dad” is no longer cool.
Okay, well maybe it was never the coolest, but still…
According to The Daily Beast, the latest trend for new dads is to skip the long-used moniker in favour of “Papa”.
As all good trends start, it’s the hipsters of the world who are bucking tradition and adopting what they say is a more familiar and friendly term.
Apparently it’s “like dad with a twist”.
“There’s no excitement to it [dad], and I feel like the word papa nowadays has so many meanings,” one papa explained to The Daily Beast.
“We live in an age when fathers are more in touch with their feminine sides and are all right with playing dress-up and putting on makeup with their daughters.”
While another claimed the words “mum” and “dad” were “very Saved By The Bell-ish”.
These papas aren’t alone in bucking the trend.
It seems the mums aren’t too keen on being ol’ mumsy either, instead preferring “mama”.
While we can understand how strange it can be to find yourself being called “mum” or “dad” when that’s what your own parents were called, is this a trend that will take off?
And how keen are teens going to be to use the term “mama” and “papa”?
