Peter Garrett may be set to rock the music world with the release of a solo record.

While the name or release date are not known at this stage, industry insiders have confirmed to AAP that the Midnight Oil frontman and former Labor politician has already recorded the album.

When quizzed about the album, Paula Jones – Midnight Oil’s long-time publicist – did not confirm nor deny its existence. “We have no comment to make at present,” Jones told AAP.

It would mark a stunning return to the music scene for Garrett, who last recorded an album with Aussie rock band Midnight Oil in 2001, before quitting the industry for a career in federal politics – which took him all the way to the ministry in the Rudd and Gillard Labor governments.

Garrett rose to worldwide fame for his powerful singing and charismatic stage presence, but only played what would be considered a minor role in the band’s songwriting process, headed by drummer and singer Rob Hirst and Jim Moginie.

It’s understood several of the nations most highly regarded studio session musicians were enlisted for the solo project.

All signs have been pointing to Garrett making his musical comeback sooner rather than later.

The singer recently bought a new home in the Sydney suburb of Paddington, that was reportedly set to be renovated with a space for a music studio at the rear.

The former Labor MP and his wife Doris bought the rundown terrace for $2.7 million in March, according to

And last week Garrett joked about the name he would use should he start up a new band.

“The Escape Hatch, it’s what many people are looking for, but also a possible new century in balance,” he told the New Zealand Herald.

Garret revealed in October last year he started writing songs again while he was working on his recently published memoir Big Blue Sky.

Midnight Oil formed in 1970 and released 16 albums, their last, Capricornia, released in 2002.

Rolling Stone magazine once described the environmentally and socially aware band as “one of the most significant bands ever to emerge from Australia”.
