Peter Frampton’s first-ever unplugged album, Acoustic Classics, will be released this Friday, February 26, but you can get an advance listen to the full record now at Billboard.com. The 11-track collection features stripped-down renditions of Frampton’s best-known songs, as well as one new tune that he co-wrote with his longtime collaborator Gordon Kennedy.

Frampton tells Billboard that people often encouraged him to make an acoustic album over the years, but he initially resisted the idea.

“I just didn’t want to try it,” he admits. “I now think it was just stubbornness and fear — or fear and then stubbornness because I was scared.”

The guitar whiz also says he wrongly assumed that the project would be fast and easy to complete.

“When I started the CD I thought, ‘Ha ha, it’s gonna take me a couple of days,'” Frampton points out. “I have such a high standard of my own output that when I did two or three tracks, I came into the control room and listened to them and I was just, ‘It’s OK. It’s good. It’s fine,’ but I wanted more. So I spent a few months going in every day doing different performances of different songs until I found the ones that worked for me and I thought people would like.”

Peter adds that he wanted listeners to feel like he was sitting alone in a room with them and playing them songs he’d just written.

Coinciding with the release of Acoustic Classics, Frampton will embark on a new U.S. leg of his Raw unplugged tour that runs from a March 9 show in Tucson, Arizona, through to a March 26 concert in Tacoma, Washington. The performances will feature Frampton accompanied by Kennedy, as well as by his son, singer/guitarist Julian Frampton, who will open the gigs.

In addition to playing songs that appear on Acoustic Classics Frampton will perform tunes from his 2014 Hummingbird in a Box EP, material from his old band Humble Pie and covers of Buddy Holly’s “Peggy Sue” and The Beatles’ “Norwegian Wood.”

The 65-year-old rocker also tells Billboard that he’ll be plugging in later in the year to play some joint dates with Lynyrd Skynyrd and Gregg Allman.
