Former R.E.M front man Michael Stipe made a rare solo appearance on last night’s edition of The Tonight Show, paying tribute to a rock icon.
Backed only by a piano, the heavily-bearded Stipe performed a rendition of the late David Bowie’s song “The Man Who Sold the World.” You can watch the performance now on YouTube.
Later this week, Stipe will appear at both New York City tribute concerts for Bowie, taking place Thursday at Carnegie Hall and Friday at Radio City Music Hall, respectively. Both shows are sold out, but you can live stream the Radio City event via MusicofDavidBowie.com.
The lineups for the Bowie tributes also include Blondie, Debbie Harry, Mumford & Sons, The Flaming Lips, Pixies, Perry Farrell, and Patti Smith.
