A man has died and a woman has had a lucky escape after both were bitten by poisonous snakes in north Queensland.

The 46-year-old Cairns woman was bitten on the leg by a brown snake hiding in her car at Edmonton, in far north Queensland, on Sunday night.

She was rushed to Cairns Base Hospital but was released on Monday morning.

The scare came on the same day a 62-year-old grandfather died after he was bitten on the hand by a snake, believed to be a brown or taipan, when walking on his property at Bluewater north of Townsville.

An ambulance spokesman said the man’s wife and granddaughter performed first aid before they arrived but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Snake experts have warned that the warmer weather is causing increased snake activity in Queensland.
