The sun might have been shining bright at Canterbury on Thursday but punters around the country were left staring at Blake Shinn’s rear end as the field crossed the line in the Hyland Race Colours Plate.
Shinn partnered the Chris Waller-trained Miss Royale, who started favourite but was forced to make a wide run around the turn before closing strongly to finish second behind Defender.
Shortly after they crossed the line, video footage displayed Shinn’s bare bottom for all to see. “The elastic went during the race, but I had to keep going,” Shinn said.
Tommy Berry rode Defender to victory and despite the three-year-old being a daughter of champion filly Alinghi with a bright future, Berry took more pleasure in a different result.

“What a great race to win,” he said. “It meant I was the only one that didn’t have to stare at Blake’s arse the whole way up the straight.”
Shinn finished the day on a high note when Eisenhower came from off the pace to win the TAB Place Multi Handicap (1100m).
“I usually come here and stay focused in search of winners. People wouldn’t know I’m that cheeky,” Shinn said leaving the crowd laughing before Sky Channel’s Richard Haynes told him to “go and debrief with your owners” leaving oncourse patrons barely able to talk.
