Well, Jennifer Lawrence certainly got the last laugh. The Oscar winner has demanded a $20 million pay cheque to star opposite Chris Pratt in upcoming space drama Passengers, The Hollywood Reporter reports.
The massive salary demand comes after last year’s Sony hacking scandal where it was leaked that Lawrence and Amy Adams were paid less than their male co-stars for American Hustle.
Pratt will reportedly earn $10 million for his role in Sony’s sci-fi film, despite his part being bigger than Lawrence’s. This figure could raise however, depending on the success of Pratt’s next blockbuster, Jurassic World.
According to reports, the 24-year-old actress was prepared to walk away from the role if Sony’s new film chief, Tom Rothman, failed to uphold the $20 million price tag she had been promised before he came on board. Rothman is said to be trying to keep the film budget at around $80-$95 million.
If Lawrence does scoop the hefty fee, it will be a major win for female actors seeking equal pay. The face of the Hunger Games franchise reportedly also landed $15 million for her other upcoming film, Joy.
J-Law isn’t the first actress to petition for equal pay. Fellow A-lister Charlize Theron recently revealed that she was paid the same amount as her co-stars for her role in the forthcoming Snow White and the Huntsman sequel, after she simply demanded it.
“I have to give them credit because once I asked, they said yes. They did not fight it. And maybe that’s the message: That we just need to put our foot down,” she told Elle magazine.
