Kiss frontman Gene Simmons has apologised for comments he made about Prince’s death.

A longtime critic of stars who abuse alcohol and drugs, in a recent interview with Newsweek the rocker appeared to have little sympathy for the Purple Rain icon, who reportedly battled a painkiller dependency in the weeks and months before his death last month.

The outspoken singer told the publication that it was pathetic how Prince died because of an alleged drug addiction. “(Prince’s) drugs killed him,” the outspoken star told the publication.

“What do you think? He died from a cold? “I think Prince was heads, hands and feet above all the rest of them. I thought he left (Michael) Jackson in the dust. Prince was way beyond that. But how pathetic that he killed himself. “Don’t kid yourself, that’s what he did. Slowly, I’ll grant you… but that’s what drugs and alcohol is: a slow death.”

Simmons has since apologised for his comments in a note posted to his Twitter account. “I just got such s*** from my family for my big mouth again. I apologise I have a long history of getting very angry at what drugs do to the families/friends of the addicts. I get angry at drug users because of my experience being around them coming up in the rock scene,” he posted.

Simmons tried to excuse his comments by explaining that he was raised in a culture where addicts were seen as losers. “Needless to say, I didn’t express myself properly here,” he wrote.

“I don’t shy away from controversy, and angry critics really don’t bother me at all. If I think I’m right, I’ll throw up a finger and dig my heels in and laugh. But this time, I was not. So, my apologies.”

In a PS note at the bottom of the apology, Simmons blamed media outlets for “quote-mining” things he’s said in the past and applying them to new situations, and warned people to: “Be wary of click bait.”

Prince was found in an elevator in his Paisley Park complex near Minneapolis, Minnesota on April 21.

Autopsy results into his cause of death have yet to be released, but multiple reports suggest Prince was struggling with painkillers he was taking for a hip injury.
