This has turned into a bad week for Don McLean.
According to Billboard, the “American Pie” icon, already facing a half-dozen counts of domestic violence, has been forced to postpone next month’s tour of Australia. The 11 shows include an appearance at BluesFest Easter Weekend.
And now, there’s word from Massachusetts that a group of high school students are pushing for the plug to be pulled on McLean’s April 24th show in Hyannis. CapeCod.com reports that student leaders of the Mentors in Violence Prevention programs at four high schools have written to the head of the local school district requesting the concert be cancelled.
Calling McLean “a bad role model,” the statement says, “His appearance…would be a mistake. We believe payment to Mr. McLean for his entertainment enables him to continue a lifestyle we do not agree with.”
Barnstable’s interim superintendent, William Butler, said discussions are ongoing with McLean’s management company to determine if the show should still take place.
