Rene Angelil has passed away, age 73, after losing his battle with throat cancer on Thursday.
Celine Dion’s husband of 21 years passed away in the couple’s home in Las Vegas.
“Rene Angelil, 73, passed away this morning as his home in Las Vegas after a long and courageous battle against cancer,” the rep said in a statement to PEOPLE.
“The family requests that their privacy be respected at the moment; more details will be provided at a later time.”
The 73-year-old is survived by Dion and the couple’s three children, Rene-Charles, 14, Nelson, 5 and Eddy, 5, as well as adult children from his previous relationship Anne-Marie, Patrick and Jean-Pierre.
Angelil played a huge role in Dion’s illustrious career, acting as a manager and mentor throughout.
Diagnosed with throat cancer in 1998, his health deteriorated significantly in the past year, to the point that Celine took a hiatus from her Las Vegas residency at Caesers Palace.
