To the person who queued up behind the person who ended up buying the winning one-BILLION-dollar lottery ticket in the US, we’re so very sorry.

The person who won the $US1.5 billion ($AU2.1 billion) jackpot allowed a fellow customer to cut in line in front of them to buy a ticket in the same draw.

“A simple act of kindness led to an amazing outcome,” the lottery said of the winner, who has chosen to remain anonymous.

As allowed by South Carolina law, the winner has elected to remain anonymous and has chosen the cash option of a one-time payment of $US877,784,124 ($AU1.2 billion).

It’s largest jackpot payout to a single winner in US history.

Mega Millions winners can choose between taking a lump sum payout or receiving annual payments over a 30-year period. Unlike in Australia, US lottery prizes are also subject to income taxes.
