1. DANNY COULD HAVE BEEN PLAYED BY THE FONZ
Henry Winkler was originally offered the lead role of Danny Zuko but felt it was too similar to his role in Happy Days, and he didn’t want to be typecast as a 1950’s bad boy.
2. MARIE OSMOND KNOCKED BACK PLAYING SANDY
The wholesome singer was at the height of her fame in the late 70’s but declined the offer to star in the film as she felt Sandy turning ‘bad’ to get her man was the wrong example to set to young women.
3. CARRIE FISHER WENT CLOSE TO PLAYING SANDY AS WELL
Grease director Randall Kleiser visited Star Wars director George Lucas on set and strongly considered Fisher for the part before Olivia Newton-John became available.
4. OLIVIA WASN’T SURE SHE WAS RIGHT FOR THE ROLE EITHER
After one of the film’s co-writers met Newton-John at a party and begged her to star in the film, Livvy insisted that she film a screen test with Travolta to make sure they had enough chemistry that would translate to the big screen.
5. JUST HOW OLD WERE THE STARS ANYWAY?
Even though they were playing High School students, all of the cast were well into their 20’s and beyond.
At the time of filming Olivia Newton-John was 30, John Travolta 24, and Stockard Channing who played Rizzo was 34.
Jamie Donnelly who played Jan was 30 and her hair was turning prematurely grey, so she was forced to dye it black. However, the colour grew out so quickly that she was forced to cover her grey roots with black crayon.
6. ANDY WARHOL NEARLY PLAYED THE ART TEACHER
The quirky artist who is best known for his prints of Campbell’s soup cans was considered for the role of the school’s art teacher.
However an executive who had an axe to grind with the quirky pop artist said that he would appear in the film “over his dead body”
So that’s a “no” then..?
7. THE SON OF A US PRESIDENT NEARLY STARRED IN THE FILM
Steven Ford who was the son of then US President Gerald Ford, knocked back the role of Sandy’s boyfriend Tom Chisum. He got too nervous and backed out even though he didn’t have any lines so the role instead went to Lorenzo Lamas who would later star in The Bold And The Beautiful.
8. RIZZO’S HICKIES WERE REAL
Jeff Conway, who played Keneckie decided to give Stockard Channing real hickies before filming. Talk about method acting!
However he was actually infatuated with Olivia Newton-John and ended up marrying her sister Rona.
9. WHY IS THE BEGINNING OF THE MOVIE ANIMATED?
The director felt that the title song was a bit too dark for a ‘preppy’ movie like Grease and wanted Barry Gibb to write more upbeat lyrics.
Gibb suggested filming a sequence to match the music, and when the movie was released the song went straight to #1
10. THE SPOOKY ELVIS COINCIDENCE
In the song “Look At Me, I’m Sandra Dee” Rizzo sings the lines: “Elvis, Elvis, let me be. Keep that pelvis far from me” while looking at a picture of The King.
The scene was actually filmed on August 16, 1977, the day that Elvis died!!!
11. TRAVOLTA DEMANDED TO SING ‘GREASE LIGHTNING’
John Travolta’s character originally didn’t take the lead vocal’s on the classic track, it was supposed to be sung by Keneckie. But Travolta put his foot down and insisted that he sing the iconic song instead.
12. TRAVOLTA ALSO CHANGED THE SCRIPT
Having played Danny over 100 times in the stage production of Grease, Travolta felt that on occasion the film script wasn’t as well written as it could have been, and instead inserted lines from the stage version.
The film director agreed and all of these changes remained in the final edit of the movie.
13. COCA COLA SIGNS HAD TO BE AIR BRUSHED OUT OF THE FILM
The film’s producers had set up a commercial arrangement with Pepsi, but had neglected to tell the set designer who had Coke signs featured throughout the film.
The Coke images had to be removed using an optical printer, but if you keep your eyes peeled you can see a fridge that features the coke logo displayed briefly.
14. DID SANDY ACTUALLY DIE???
A conspiracy theory suggests that Sandy in fact did not get saved from drowning by Danny and the rest of the film is simply her hallucinating, and the scene at the end of the film where the car takes off into the sky is Sandy actually going to heaven!
15. OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN’S PANTS WERE REALLY TIGHT
The famous black spandex pants that she wears in the films final scene were so tight she had to be sewn into them!
She later said: “Believe me, I had to be very careful about what I ate and drank. It was excruciating.”
