Here is some helpful information for you to keep in mind if the Brisbane flooding affects you.
Step 1: Gather Information
Follow weather developments at all times via radio or television. Keep a battery-powered radio on you at all times if possible. Remember, flash flooding can happen in minutes. If your area has been identified as being under a flash flood warning, move to higher ground IMMEDIATELY and do not wait to be specifically told to do so.
Be aware that flooding may occur without it raining particularly hard.
Step 2: Prepare Your Home For Evacuation
If you suspect that evacuation is a possibility from your area, prepare your home accordingly. Bring lawn furniture inside or place it securely in your garage or shed. Move any objects with sentimental value to upper floors. If you are instructed to do so, you may need to turn off your power or gas. Make sure you know how to do this.
Disconnect any non-essential electrical appliance should water suddenly enter the house. NEVER TOUCH ELECTRICAL ITEMS IF YOU ARE STANDING IN WATER.
Step 3: While Away From Your Home
During a flood you may need to leave your house for someplace safer. If this happens, take precautions when moving about in a flood. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO MOVE THROUGH FAST FLOWING WATER. Even if the water on 15cm deep, the force of the current may be enough to knock you down. Carry a walking stick or something else to help you keep your balance or to check the depth in front of you.
If you are in a car, and flood waters begin to= rise, abandon the car and take your chances on foot. You will be safer walking than in a car.
DRIVING CAN BE DEADLY
Drivers can quickly be trapped in their cars by flood waters and possibly be swept away. Do not drive if you can avoid it. Try not to be over confident.
