Some of the Weirder Easter Events

Indonesian Catholics participate in a re-enactment of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ on Good Friday . On last count, Catholics make just over 3 per cent of the Indonesian population.

In Berwick-Upon_Tweed in England, pilgrims walk with crosses – called the Northern Cross Pilgrimage – as they make they way to Holy Island or Lindisfarne

In Germany, Catholics flock the road during their Good Friday procession in Lohr am Main. This is a 300-year-old tradition to commemorate the death of Christ.

Also in Germany, in the town of Traunstein, a pilgrimage of horses is held every year on Easter Monday to honour Saint George.

In Bacup, Lancashire, England, the black-faced Morrismen of the Britannia Coconutters dance boundry to boundary. This has happened every Easter Saturday for over one-hundred years and is a pagan dance intended to ward off evil winter spirits. The Cocounutters derive their name from the time in which coal miners would wear coconuts as primitive knee-pads. The blackened faces are to disguise themselves from the evil spirits.

In New York's Little Italy people participate in the Stations of the Cross during their Good Friday procession.

The Philippines take it a bit further, re-enacting the crucifixion of Jesus Christ in full. A penitent is 'guarded' while being crucified in an annual ritual on Good Friday. Since the 1950's, a dozen or so penitents participate in an annual re-enactment of Christ's crucifixion, a practice that the Catholic Church frowns upon.  Mostly because these penitents are actually nailed to crosses. There  are no special effects here.

U.S. President Barack Obama stands with a costumed Easter Bunny as he welcomes people to the annual White House Easter Egg Roll on the South Lawn of the White House. The event dates back to 1878 and is named for races where children push coloured eggs across the grass using wooden spoons.

In New York again there is an annual Easter Bonnet Parade.  The parade is a New York tradition dating back to the mid-1800s when the social elite would parade their new fashions down Fifth Avenue after attending Easter services in one of the Fifth Avenue churches.

Christian pilgrims carry wooden crosses along the Via Dolorosa during the Good Friday procession in Jerusalem. In Jerusalem Christian pilgrims took part in processions along the route that Jesus is believed to have taken in his last days as he carried the cross.

Women wearing a 'mantilla' take part in the 'Pasion' brotherhood walk during their Holy Week procession  in Cordoba, Spain.
