John Hurt Has Died

John Hurt, star of The Elephant Man and Harry Potter, has passed away.

The legendary actor had battled pancreatic cancer in recent years but, according to The Mirror, was given the all clear in October 2015.

He told the publication at the time that he was "overjoyed".

"I am thrilled. It all looks great for the future, it's fantastic," he added.

Hurt, who had been acting for more than six decades, was awarded a knighthood in July 2015, and had been nominated for a slew of awards over the course of his career.

He is most notably known for his Oscar-nominated role in the 1980 biopic The Elephant Man, his turn in Alien and from playing wand-maker Mr Ollivander throughout the Harry Potter series.

Hurt is survived by his wife of 12 years, Anwen Rees-Meyer.
