Son Was Mentally Incompetent At Time Of Phil Walsh's Death

The prosecution has today conceded that Cy Walsh was mentally incompetent at the time he killed his father, AFL Coach Phil Walsh, in July 2015. 

The 27-year-old has been in custody in a secure psychiatric facility since being charged with murder. 

The son has pleaded not guilty to murder due to mental incompetence. 

A hearing in late September on his mental competence will determine his sentence. 

Further examinations of hair samples and a third psychiatric assessment are still to be obtained at the request of the Defence of Public Prosecutions. 

If his plea of not guilty on the basis of mental incompetence by the Supreme Court in September, Walsh may be subjected to a lifetime psychiatric supervision order. 

Walsh allegedly stabbed his father to death on July 3, 2015, while his mother Meredith was taken to hospital and treated for a leg injury. 

Phil Walsh was the senior coach of the Adelaide Crows AFL team at the time of his death.

Further details of the case of been suppressed by the DPP in the case the Walsh be tried for murder.
