Pregnant Woman, Wheelchair-Bound Teen Escape Bris House Fire
Smoke alarms have saved a Brisbane family of seven from a raging fire that destroyed their home.
The family, including five children and a pregnant woman, were able to escape from their low-set brick home at Alexandra Hills just before midnight, after alarms woke them and gave them time to get out.
"The house is a total loss. It's unfortunate. However, all the people are safe," a police spokesman has told reporters.
"It's a timely reminder of the importance of smoke detectors. If they weren't working it could have been a very different outcome."
There are reports one of the children was in a wheelchair. Everyone inside escaped without harm.
Young witness Tarlia Martin said the scene was frightening.
"... horrific screams and the girl saying 'help me, get me out of here, let me out'," she told the Seven Network.
Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the blaze.
