Moped Rider Assaults Off-Duty Policeman
An off-duty police officer lost consciousness after allegedly being punched several times by a moped rider who he was trying to stop from leaving the scene of a crash in Queensland.
The 28-year-old rider crashed his moped at Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast at about 5am on Monday and when the off-duty officer tried to stop him from fleeing, the rider assaulted him, police say.
The man is also alleged to have punched a woman who came to aid the policeman.
The rider, from Caloundra, then took off on his moped but crashed again and broke his leg before being arrested and taken to hospital for treatment.
The man was charged at a bedside hearing with one count each of serious assault police, assault occasioning bodily harm and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.
He was remanded in custody to appear in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court on June 22.
The off-duty officer was also taken to hospital with non-life threatening head injuries.
