Man Bitten By Shark Off NSW North Coast
A young man has suffered lacerations to his hip after he was bitten by a shark off Ballina on the NSW north coast.
The 17-year-old was surfing in East Ballina at approximately 9am this morning when the attack happened; he managed to make his way out of the water, where he was treated by a nurse and lifesavers before being taken to hospital in a stable condition.
A Westpac Lifesaver helicopter was called but it wasn't required.
Police and the NSW Surf Lifesaving crew are still at the scene, and are advising beachgoers that all Ballina Shire beaches have been closed, and will remain so for at least 24 hours.
The Daily Telegraph are reporting that the same beach was due to be trialled with a shark barrier, but the installation was scrapped with rough surf conditions proved too risky for divers.
The attack comes nearly a year after a similar attack on a young surfer, Sam Morgan, who was mauled at the same beach and had to be flown to the Gold Coast University Hospital for treatment.
