Great News! Giant Panda's Taken Off The Endangered List
This has got to be the good news story of the year!
After being classified as 'endangered' for a number of years, China's giant Panda has had it's status downgraded to 'vulnerable' on the Red List of threatened species, The International Union for Conservation of Nature has announced.
Since 2014 there has been a 17% increase in the Panda population thanks to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) working closely with the Chinese government to save their habitat, as well as increased funding to their breeding project.
WWF Director General Marco Lambertini says:
“For over fifty years, the giant panda has been the globe’s most beloved conservation icon as well as the symbol of WWF. Knowing that the panda is now a step further from extinction is an exciting moment for everyone committed to conserving the world’s wildlife and their habitats,”
“The recovery of the panda shows that when science, political will and engagement of local communities come together, we can save wildlife and also improve biodiversity."
While far from being out of the woods, the fact that this beloved creature may still be here for future generations is enough to put a little smile on your face.
Plus we get to enjoy looking at Panda's being adorable without the nagging thought that they may soon disappear.
