The Shocking Truth About Australia's Child Bride Trade
An increasing number of young Australian girls are reportedly being forced into the child bride trade.
A federal minister says he's sickened by reports girls as young as nine-years-old are being taken overseas and forced to become child brides.
The Daily Telegraph reported on Tuesday at least 73 such cases had been reported to a NSW government hotline since mid-2014.
Treasurer and former immigration minister Scott Morrison said the issue sickened him and he urged anyone with information about the practice to contact police and child protection agencies.
According to News.com.au NSW Family and Community Services Minister Brad Hazzard has told the paper the "barbaric and cruel" practice has prompted him to call on the federal government to take action.
Mr Hazzard also says religious imams need to be involved in educating their local communities about the issue.
