Channel 7 Slammed For African Gang Reports

Channel 7 is in hot water for their coverage of "African gangs".

The Australian Communications and Media Authority rules Seven’s Sunday Night had put to air an inaccurate statement about the African-Australian community.

The July 2018 episode stated gangs were "responsible for an alarming surge in violent crime".

However, the body found that statistics do not support this claim, with just 8.5 per cent of aggravated burglaries committed by African-Australians.

ACMA ruled that there was not enough evidence to allege that Sudanese gangs were the "sole or main cause of an increase in violent crime".

"It is unacceptable for news and current affairs programs to broadcast statements that may mislead audiences," ACMA chair Nerida O'Loughlin said .

In response, Seven said the reporter's phrasing was "insufficiently precise".

"We would point out this was a single sentence within a 20-minute report, of which the overall theme was a personal journey of challenging racial preconceptions," he said.
