Aussie Mum's Shock As Son Drops $10K On Rare Stikeez
An Aussie mum has managed to claw her money back after her son bought a rare Coles Stikeez figurine on eBay for $10,000.
7News reports The 'Golden Billy Banana' was one of only 100 that Coles gave away as part of their latest promotion.
The banana has attracted bids of up to $20,000 on eBay.
Donna Jacob’s son, who has autism, is a huge Stikeez fan, but that the golden banana was a piece of fruit her family couldn’t afford.
However, after finding the tiny figurine on eBay, and as his mum’s credit card deets were already auto-saved on the computer, he was able to click through and purchase the elusive banana.
Donna only realised what had happened after she got a confirmation email from eBay.
She tried to explain the situation to the seller, the bank and to PayPal… but it fell on deaf ears.
"Between PayPal and the bank, there should be at least one stopper that says 'hang on, this isn't right'... and no-one did," she told 7News.
It wasn’t until Today Tonight contacted eBay was the mum refunded.
"eBay understands there are unique circumstances in this case. As a result, the buyer will receive a refund for the purchase," the company said in a statement.
Donna wanted more to be done to protect vulnerable shoppers.
"I just don't go out and spend $10,000 in one transaction, so they definitely need protocols in place to stop this happening."
