Joe Jackson's Upcoming Album of Four Cities
Joe Jackson's first new studio album in seven years, Fast Forward, will be released on October 2. The 16-track collection features four sets of four songs that the eclectic British singer/songwriter recorded in four cities around the world: New York City, Amsterdam, Berlin and New Orleans.
Each set of tunes was recorded with a different lineup of musicians. In New York, Jackson worked with his longtime bass player Graham Maby, as well as guitarist Bill Frisell, drummer Brian Blade and jazz violinist Regina Carter.
The Amsterdam tracks feature collaborations with Stefan Kruger and Stefan Schmid of the Dutch band Zuco 103, the Concertgebouw Orchestra and guest singer Mitchell Sink, a 14-year-old cast member of the Broadway musical Matilda. The Berlin recordings include contributions by acclaimed acoustic bassist Greg Cohen and Tindersticks drummer Earl Harvin. In New Orleans, Jackson worked with three members of the local funk act Galactic and a horn section that included sax player Donald Harrison.
Jackson produced and arranged Fast Forward, and wrote 14 of the album's songs. The record also features a cover of influential New York band Television's "See No Evil" and a version of the 1930s German "Kabarett" tune "Good Bye Jonny."
"A Little Smile," a song from Fast Forward's Amsterdam sessions, can be heard at Jackson's official website and at the Caroline Records YouTube channel.
Meanwhile, Jackson will support the album with a U.S. tour that kicks off September 29 in Seattle and going through to a November 4 show in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Jackson will be performing songs from throughout his long career, dating back to his debut album 'Look Sharp' in 1979 as well as new material, on the trek. He'll also serve as his own opening act, hitting the stage for a solo piano-and-vocals set before being joined by his backing group.
