David Bowie Records New Song for new TV Series

David Bowie has written and recorded an original tune that will be heard during the opening credits of a new TV series called The Last Panthers that will air in a variety of European countries this year.

The six-part series is a crime thriller that's described as being set in "the dark heart of Europe where a shadowy alliance of gangsters and 'banksters' now rules."  The show stars John Hurt and Samantha Morton, and is directed by Johan Renck, whose credits include Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead and Bloodline, as well as music videos by Madonna, Beyoncé, New Order and Lana Del Rey.

Renck says Bowie agreed to contribute the song after the two met during the filming of The Last Panthers.

"I was looking for one of the icons of my youth to write the music for the title sequence, but was presented with a god," says the director.  "His first response was precise, engaged and curious.  The piece of music he laid before us embodied every aspect of our characters and the series itself -- dark, brooding, beautiful and sentimental (in the best possible incarnation of this word)."

Renck adds, "All along, the man inspired and intrigued me and as the process passed, I was overwhelmed with his generosity.  I still can't fathom what actually happened."

The Last Panthers will air on the Sky Atlantic network in the U.K., Ireland, Italy, Germany and Austria, and on Canal+ in France.  Watch a trailer for the show at Sky.com.
