Spielberg Predicts Death Of Superhero Movies

With the cyclical nature of film, director Steven Spielberg predicts Superhero movies may see their days numbered in the near future and go the way of the Western.

And if anyone is qualified to make such a sweeping statement it's him.

It may seem impossible with the saturation of superhero movies in the market at the moment.

But Spielberg says fresh blood coming through the ranks will be looking to push the boundaries and transform the film industry the way we have seen in the past.

“We were around when the Western died and there will be a time when the superhero movie goes the way of the Western,” Spielberg said.

“It doesn’t mean there won’t be another occasion where the Western comes back and the superhero movie someday returns.

"Of course, right now the superhero movie is alive and thriving. I’m only saying that these cycles have a finite time in popular culture.

"There will come a day when the mythological stories are supplanted by some other genre that possibly some young filmmaker is just thinking about discovering for all of us.”

The comments come at the same time as Spielberg affiliated DreamWorks announces its separation from Disney and with rumours circulating the director could be looking to reboot cult classics Jaws and Back the the Future.

... Plus, how many Batman / Superman / Spiderman remakes and spin-offs can there be?
