Mel Gibson Opens Up About The Passion Of The Christ Sequel

Mel Gibson has confirmed reports he's working on a follow-up to The Passion Of The Christ.

The filmmaker's 2004 movie, which starred Jim Caviezel as The Messiah, became the highest-grossing independent film of all time, hauling in more than $600 million at the global box office, and almost three months after screenwriter Randall Wallace, who has worked closely with Mel on films like Braveheart and We Were Soldiers, told The Hollywood Reporter the two pals are planning the project, Gibson has opened up about the film.

Talking to fans at the SoCal Harvest evangelical event in California over the weekend, the actor/director said, "It's not the Passion 2. It's called The Resurrection. Of course, that's a very big subject and it needs to be looked at because we don't want to just do a simple rendering of it - you know, read what happened."

Calling the project a "huge undertaking", he added, "In order to read it, experience and explore probably deeper meanings of what it's about, it's going to take some doing and Randall Wallace is up to the task."

Wallace wasn't actually involved in The Passion Of The Christ, but directed Mel in We Were Soldiers and took charge of hit Christian film Heaven Is For Real
