Macca's Big Apple Surprise

Tickets for the show at Irving Plaza went on sale without warning at 10 am, priced at $40 cash each, one per customer. It took more than 90 minutes to sell out the venue, which has a legal capacity of 1,025.

There were no great surprises during the 24-song set, although he did break out Carl Perkins' "Matchbox," which he generally plays during sound check, not shows, The Beatles' rarely played "One After 909" and Buddy Holly's "It's So Easy." (McCartney owns Holly's publishing.)

Celebrities came out in force to see McCartney rock such a small venue. Spotted in the balcony were Jimmy Buffett, Meryl Streep, Bradley Cooper, Leonardo DiCaprio, Steve Martin, Steve Van Zandt, Lorne Michaels, Steve Buscemi, Jim Carrey, Chris Rock, Peter Asher, Peyton Manning, Eddie Murphy, Emma Stone, Tom Hanks, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, Paul Rudd, Kristen Wiig, David Spade and Billy Crystal.
