Liev Schreiber Gushes About Naomi Watts Days Before Split
Just days before announcing his shock split from partner of 11 years Naomi Watts, Liev Schreiber gushed about how "obsessed" he was with her when they first met.
News.com.au reports that, during a promotional interview for Ray Donovan, the 48-year-old spent most of the time talking about his long-term love and, in particular, their first date.
"I was very nervous, I was very intimidated, I was very impressed," Schreiber said last Friday in New York.
"I was a huge Mulholland Drive fan, it was one of my favourite pieces of cinema, and it was this movie that I would just watch over and over again.
"I was a little obsessed with her."
The X-Men Origins star went on to explain how Watts had asked him to dance at the Met Ball, laughing: "Thank God she was forward!"
"And if I wasn't intimdated enough just by being at the Met Ball, I went down to the club where she was sitting with Sean Penn and Benicio Del Toro.
"And she is sitting between them, and they are chatting her up and she is chatting them up. And I just stood there like a lump on a log for probably 30 minutes holding a drink.
"Finally, I was just like, 'This is ridiculous, I am way in over my head.'
"So, I said to her, 'I am sorry, I have got to go home.'
"I was really uncomfortable."
After a brief pause, Schreiber continued: "And she chased me out of the place and said, 'Don't you want my number?'
"She actually said digits. Which I was shocked to hear her be so ghetto," he then laughed.
"I never ended up dancing with her that night but we went a couple of days later in the morning for some cupcakes...
"And that was it."
The couple this morning released a joint statement announcing their separation.
"Over the past few months, we've come to the conclusion that the best way forward for us as a family is to separate as a couple," it read. "It is with great love, respect, and friendship in our hearts that we look forward to raising our children together and exploring this new phase of our relationship.
"While we appreciate your curiosity and support, we ask the press to be mindful of our children and respect their right to privacy."
Schreiber and Watts have two sons, Sasha, eight, and Samuel, seven.
